Sonja Vuković is an assistant professor at the University of Belgrade (Faculty of Philosophy, Department for Archaeology). She teaches different courses related to archaeozoology and supervises several MA and PhD theses. Sonja completed all the levels of her studies at the University of Belgrade, while her PhD thesis related to animal remains from Roman amphitheatres was defended in 2015.  She is currently head of the Laboratory for Bioarchaeology (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade), and in the last 12 years, she has worked as an archaeozoologist at the Roman site of Viminacium. Her research is focused on various aspects of human-animal interactions in the Holocene past, while she is particularly engaged with the questions of human-wildlife interactions, the introduction of exotic animals, animal burials, as well as questions of a meat diet, animal husbandry, and hunting in the Roman times in the Central Balkans. Sonja is at the moment PI of the project ARCHAEOWILD: The Holocene History of Human-Wildlife Conflict and Coexistence: Archaeozoological, Archaeobotanical, Isotopic, Ancient DNA, Iconographic and Written Evidence from the Central Balkans funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (2022-2025).
